The remains of a World War II hero from the Hudson Valley finally arrived back home on Friday after being lost for 80 years.
According to a group that works to find and identify missing service members, U.S. Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. Eugene J. Darrigan was killed in action March 11, 1944.
The group says Darrigan's plane went down in the water during a mission in New Guinea.
A recovery team searched the crash site, recovered and then identified Darrigan's remains using modern technology in 2023.
State police joined Darrigan's family and the Wappingers Falls community in honoring his sacrifice.
