Residents across Long Island are expressing concerns about future artificial intelligence data centers after an AI flyer started circulating on social media.
Brookhaven town leaders say there are currently no plans to build one.
The fake flyer claimed the Brookhaven town board was going to vote to rezone an area in Yaphank for a proposed AI data center.
Town Supervisor Dan Panico has reassured residents there are no pending applications with the town at this time.
But the situation has still caused some chaos.
Now Panico is looking to impose an 18-month moratorium on data centers in Brookhaven.
“I feel between the light pollution, the noise pollution and the damage to the water, it is deadly to have around us,” said Cora Lovetere, of Medford.
“They will learn the truth, said Panico. “And if they wasted a beautiful night, it’s not because of the people in this building. It’s because of those people who are, unfortunately, spreading misinformation, which is all too common on social media.”
Brookhaven would be the first town on Long Island to declare a moratorium.
The board will be discussing the issue in Thursday’s meeting.
