Nassau police rescued an osprey that fell from its nest late Thursday afternoon.

Sixth Precinct officers received a 911 call around 5 p.m. for an injured bird at 99 South Service Road in North Hills.

Upon arrival, they found the young animal had fallen out of the nest and was hurt.

Officers safely secured the osprey, which is a federally protected species.

Police contacted the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the bird was transported by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

It will be treated for its injuries at a rehabilitation facility and then released back into the wild, officials say.
