For many high school students, prom is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, but the price tag can be staggering. From dresses and tuxedos to accessories and transportation, families can easily spend thousands on the big night, according to national retailer Amarra.
To ease that burden, the nonprofit Operation Prom National Network kicked off its annual formalwear giveaway the first weekend of May 2025 at the Westchester County Center. The event offers free prom dresses and tuxedos to high school seniors in need, thanks to donations from local businesses and individuals.
“It’s a big part of your life, but it shouldn’t have to cost so much for you to enjoy it,” said Harlie Yarkovsky, a student from Yorktown Heights who found her senior prom dress at the event.
Operation Prom estimates more than 500 dresses and tuxedos will be distributed throughout the weekend event. Students are invited to browse through rows of gowns and suits, all free of charge with school ID or report card on Friday May 2, Saturday May 3 and Sunday May 5. A public dress sale will follow on Sunday afternoon, with proceeds going to support the nonprofit’s mission.
“We have girls crying because they find a beautiful piece and don’t have to worry about spending hundreds of dollars for a dress they’ll wear once,” said Abby Ottley of Operation Prom.
The organization is still accepting donations, especially in plus sizes. For more information about the event, click here.
