Feeding Westchester supplies fresh produce, dried goods and more to 175 food pantries throughout Westchester County.
But officials at the food bank say recent federal funding cuts has left them with less product to distribute.
Back in March the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it was cutting two pandemic-era federal programs that provided about $1 billion in funding, some of which went to food banks throughout the country. Officials at Feeding Westchester say the cuts translate into about a 1 million-pound decrease in supply, and between this fiscal year and next it will create about a $4 million deficit for the organization.
As a result, they are relying more on their dozens of retail partners from large companies like Target to local businesses such as restaurants, small grocery stores and even coffee shops. Much of those partnerships involve Feeding Westchester picking up items that would otherwise be thrown away. Instead, it ends up on the tables of those in need. They're also relying more on individual donations as well.
According to Feeding Westchester, 1 in 3 households in the county are at risk for hunger despite being one of the most affluent communities in the country.
Last year they distributed a record breaking of 23.2 million pounds of food.
