A Suffolk County man is facing animal cruelty charges following an investigation into the neglect and abuse of a dog.
Cecilio D. Matthews, 50, of Bellport, was arrested after investigators determined he failed to provide adequate care for his pet, Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross says.
The 10-year-old male gray mixed breed, named "Seven," was found to be underweight, infested with flies, and had open wounds on his ears and neck.
Seven is getting necessary medical treatment at a local animal shelter, according to the nonprofit.
Matthews will be charged with a misdemeanor and violation of animal cruelty, under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law, as well as four misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty under the Suffolk County Code.
He is set to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip next month.
Anyone who may witness animal cruelty or neglect is encouraged to contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
