Police are investigating symbols of hate drawn on a public sidewalk on Fire Island.

The hateful and offensive imagery, which included swastikas, was written in chalk in the village of Ocean Beach.

The mayor announced the discovery in a public notice posted to their website and Facebook page on Wednesday.

Village officials say they first became aware of the incident through social media and then contacted police to investigate.

By the time officers arrived, the alleged markings were gone, but the village is ensuring residents that police are continuing to look into the matter.

“Ocean Beach is a community built on respect, inclusion, and looking out for one another,” Mayor James Mallott said.

“Hate has no home in Ocean Beach and will not be tolerated. We stand together as a community against antisemitism, hate, intimidation, and discrimination in all forms,” the notice continued.

Officials are imploring anyone who witnesses an incident of this nature in the future to immediately report it to police and the village to ensure a more rapid response and the ability to preserve evidence.
