A street in Yonkers was renamed Monday to honor a police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 2022.
Rose Hill Terrace was renamed as Detective Sgt. Frank Gualdino Way on Monday.
The Yonkers street was where the late police officer grew up, according to his wife Lisa.
"This is where he lived when we met, this is where spent so much time together as a family. So, it represents all good things," Lisa said.
As News 12 has reported, Gualdino was killed in 2022 after his vehicle was struck on Tuckahoe Road.
Years later, Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said his loss is still being felt throughout the department.
Sapienza said officers still call him by his nickname, Furby.
"Not a day goes by where we still don't talk about Furby. Our motorcycles actually have furbies on the motorcycle. You'll notice there's a bunch of people wearing T-shirts to honor him," Sapienza said.
While Monday's ceremony was hosted by the Yonkers Police Department, the idea to rename the street was first brought to the family's attention by the officer's former partner, Megan Madaus.
"All of us are still a very tight group. We try to stay supportive of her at all times. So to just be here knowing that this honor is finally bestowed upon him, it means a lot," Madaus said.
