Nassau County's Senior Discount Program is generating new interest from both seniors and local businesses following recent media coverage, according to Nassau Comptroller Elaine Phillips.

Last month, News 12 reported on the program, highlighting how businesses could sign up and how seniors could access a list of participating locations.

The program is designed to connect older residents with businesses offering special discounts while helping local merchants attract customers.

The impact was almost immediate, Phillips said.

"Over 60 seniors called our office and requested the booklet, and we got 4 new businesses. Now we're looking for more," Phillips said.

The new businesses joining the program are not necessarily the types of establishments commonly associated with senior discounts.

Among the latest participants are a women's boutique in Rockville Centre and a pretzel store in Syosset. A STEM racing center for children in Syosset has also signed up, as has a pediatric dentistry practice in Garden City.

Business owners have noted the value of senior customers.

"They're a repeat customer and they're extremely, extremely loyal," said JoAnn Casa.

Phillips said the program benefits businesses by giving them additional visibility in the community.

"I think what small businesses are looking for is an outlet to promote their business. So, we're glad to do it," Phillips said.

"These are generational businesses that want to serve our community," Phillips said.

Phillips said expanding the program remains a priority and encouraged more businesses to participate.

"To all the small businesses, medium businesses, large businesses: let us help promote your business, and let's help our seniors," she said.

More than 450 businesses are already participating in Nassau County's Senior Discount Program, according to county officials, who hope to continue growing the initiative.
