A man has been arrested in Mount Vernon on North High Street following what police say was a domestic violence incident.
The Mount Vernon Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute involving a man allegedly armed with a gun at a home on North High Street.
Police say that when officers arrived, a woman told them that the suspect was armed with a firearm. Officials say the suspect refused to open the door and barricaded himself inside the apartment.
MVPD Emergency Services Unit (ESU), hostage negotiators and the Mount Vernon Detective Division responded to the scene. After multiple attempts to communicate with the suspect, police say he ultimately surrendered without incident and was placed under arrest.

Many were unable to get home for hours.
“I’ve been out since 6 a.m. so I really want to get in, but I understand that it’s an investigation," says Rohan Campbell, a Mount Vernon resident.
Some residents say they had no choice but to wait for the road to re-open.
“I can’t go anywhere else. Where else am I going to go? I don’t have family around here so it’s not like I can go to my aunt’s house or something like that?” says Jackins.
News 12 also spoke with one resident who was stuck inside her home for hours after police told her she couldn’t leave.
"There's a lot of police with metal helmets on and shields coming in and out the building," says Norina Clowney, "It's terrifying."
The incident happened near Hamilton School. News 12 saw kids and families outside the building waiting for hours to get home or to their cars.
"Police assured the principal that there was no immediate danger to students or staff and it would be safe to dismiss students from the Bleeker Street exit of the playground," a spokesperson for the Mount Vernon City School District said in a statement. "Parents were notified by the school about the police activity and closure of North High Street, and officers escorted students who needed to access their homes on North High Street. All students were dismissed safely, and staff were authorized to exit from the parking lot on North High Street after police clearance."
The name of the man arrested was not made available.
