The first-ever Chess Classic was held Saturday at the Mount Vernon Doles Center on Saturday – welcoming people of all ages to learn about the game.
The event featured an instructional class for ages 16 and younger. There was also an adult competition for those 17 and older with cash prizes.
State Sen. Jamaal Bailey said chess helps to teach the youth important skills and plan ahead for the future. He expected around 100 people to participate in the event.
