A Medford man is expected to spend between four and 12 years in prison after admitting he was driving drunk at nearly twice the legal limit when he crashed and killed his passenger.
Jefry Valdez Cruz pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and related charges stemming from an Oct. 6, 2025, crash that killed 22-year-old Edgar Guevara Ramos, and injured two others.
Prosecutors say Cruz had been drinking at a barbecue before getting behind the wheel of his BMW and driving southbound on Bellport Avenue in Medford. While speeding, he crossed into the northbound lane and slammed into trees along the roadside.
Vehicle data showed Cruz was traveling 117 mph in a 30-mph zone just seconds before the crash. Ramos was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The two other passengers were taken to a hospital, including one who had serious injuries.
Prosecutors said Cruz's blood alcohol content measured .14% about an hour after the collision.
He is due back in court on Dec. 2, when he is expected to be sentenced to four to 12 years in prison.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also lodged a detainer against Cruz and plans to take him into custody after he completes his sentence.
