Man accused of leaving the scene of fatal motorcyclist hit and run in Southold
A man was arrested in connection to a deadly crash on the East End Monday evening.
The Southold Town Police Department and Southold Fire Department responded to the report of a motor vehicle collision around 6 p.m. on Route 25, in the vicinity of Port of Egypt Marina.
When approaching the scene, an officer witnessed a 2009 Honda Civic with heavy damage driving away from the area and turned around to conduct a traffic stop, according to police.
The driver of the vehicle, Jose Perez-Perez, 58, of Greenport, was subsequently determined to have been involved in the accident and was taken into custody.
Upon arrival at the crash location, first responders found an unresponsive male motorcyclist and identified him as Rufino Tojil-Ambrocio, 42, of Greenport.
The victim was transported by the Southold Fire Department to Eastern Long Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police say.
Following an investigation by Southold Police and the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit, it was discovered that the car had been traveling westbound on Route 25 when it crossed into the opposite lane of travel and struck Tojil-Ambrocio, who was going eastbound.
Perez-Perez did submit to a field sobriety test, but no signs of impairment were found. He will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death without reporting.
