Listeria detected in soft cheese distributed by Bay Shore company
The Bay Shore-based company Nelson & Isa Lacteos has recalled soft cheese products sold across Long Island after a sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
The company, a distributor of Clover Hill Dairy cheese products, announced the recall last month. The affected products include Requesón Salvadoreño, a ricotta-style Salvadoran cheese, and Requesón Mexicano, a Mexican-style cottage cheese, sold under the La Colonia and Selectos Latanios brands.
According to the recall notice, cheese sold in one-pound plastic clamshell containers between May 15 and May 28 may be contaminated with Listeria.
The Federal Drug and Food Administration says there have been 12 illnesses and one death related to the case.
The contamination was discovered during testing done by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors.
An 18-pound plastic container of Clover Hill Dairy Requesón Cheese tested positive for the bacteria. The cheese had been repackaged into one-pound containers and sold to customers.
On June 15, six requeson cheese samples and one environmental sample tested positive for Listeria, then on June 24 a second environmental sample also tested positive.
This is the list of where the cheese was sold:
