Part of one of Long Island's most well-known abandoned sites was demolished on Thursday.

Building 1 at the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center was torn down as part of an ongoing infrastructure project.

Suffolk County officials say the site will be converted into a leaching field as part of the Kings Park sewer expansion project.

According to the county, wastewater will be treated and then the final product will go into the leaching field, where it will be absorbed into the ground.

Building 1 and other structures on the former campus have long been the target of trespassing and vandalism, particularly during the Halloween season.

As News 12 previously reported, New York State Park officials said the interest in thrill-seeking there boils down to people thinking ghosts are at the facility.

The Kings Park Psychiatric Center opened in 1885 as a state hospital for mental health care and closed in 1996.
