Fresh eggs, fruits and vegetables were handed out to senior citizens in Suffolk County Wednesday
A free farmers market was held specifically for seniors in the parking lot of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Mastic Beach.
The event, organized by Long Island Cares - The Harry Chapin Food Bank and the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, drew over 200 people.
One customer tells News 12 every little bit helps get them through.
"We can’t survive. A lot of us are on a fixed income here, part-time jobs, but we still own houses, we have electric water, everything’s gone up and you have to choose what you’re going to pay," said Kathy Hanlon of Mastic Beach.
"It’s not going to make a big, big difference, but you know it’ll get you through another day," Hanlon added.
Additionally, social workers were on hand to provide any resources the seniors might need.
A similar event, hosted by the Town of Hempstead, is being held Friday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Sands in Lido Beach.
