A 22-year-old Central Islip man faces up to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday in the fatal shooting of a Bay Shore teenager during an attempted gunpoint robbery, Suffolk County prosecutors said.
Erick Garcia arranged to meet with 19-year-old Carlos Guillen in "a vicious plan" to rob him, Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney said.
On Oct. 1, 2022 they arrived at a place picked out by Garcia. Garcia got into the passenger side of the vehicle and tried to rob Guillen at gunpoint.
As Garcia tried to carry out the robbery, Guillen accelerated and drove away with Garcia still inside the vehicle.
Prosecutors said Garcia then shot Guillen before jumping from the moving car.
Guillen attempted to call 911 but was unable to speak during the call, authorities said.
His vehicle crashed and he was taken to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound.
Investigators used cellphone records to place Garcia's phone near the scene at the time of the shooting.
The day after the killing, Garcia traveled to Florida in an effort to avoid capture.
About a month later, Garcia was arrested in Central Islip on an unrelated case after police found him in possession of an 9 mm handgun that did not have a serial number and was not connected to the homicide.
On April 11, 2024, Garcia was taken into custody and charged in connection with Guillen's death.
