A black bear spotted Tuesday in West Harrison was taken away by police.
Police say the animal was seen in the area of Harrison Street and Sherman Avenue earlier in the day. News 12 also caught the bear on camera running by the area of Columbus Avenue and Hancock Street.
"I saw the cops with a lot of rifles,” says Milton Goldentaier, a Harrison resident. “It was in my backyard."
Officers left the area around 6 p.m. but did not say whether the bear was dead or injured.
Police say the bear did not appear aggressive, sick or injured.
Local school administrators were notified out of an abundance of caution, according to officials.
Department of Environmental Conservation police officers were also on site.
"It was nerve-wracking. This is a very quiet street,” says Goldentaier.
"This is a lot of wooded areas around here. We have the lake and we also have the woods behind Preston Elementary School,” says Bruno, a Harrison resident.
